Abstract

As people's interests in lifelong sport are increasing, a study on the continuation of sport involvement is becoming more important. It would be said that the concept of commitment is useful for this kind of study. Sport commitment means attachment or adherence to sport. A person who commits to sport firmly will be involved in sport activity naturally. Concerning sport commitment, some noticeable researches have been conducted by Snyder & Spreitzer (1983), Leonald & Schmitt (1987), Curry & Parr (1988) and Stevenson (1990) in America recently, whereas very few researches are found in Japan. The purpose of this paper is to make a sport commitment scale by grasping human relation quantitatively and qualitatively through sport involvement and to verify its validity. The investigation was conducted to 620 male and 427 female college students by questionnaire method at Fukuoka City in June, 1989. The results are summarized as follows: The students, both male and female, who belong to high level group of sport commitment regard sport as more important and engage in sport activities more frequently (p <.001). They also invest more time and money in sport activities compared with the students who belong to low level group of sport commitment (p <.001). That is to say, the students who have formed sport commitment firmly tend to adhere to sport obviously. In consequence, sport commitment scale made in this study reflects sport involvement of the subjects precisely and its validity have been verified.
