Abstract

The electrophilicity of highly desolvated naked alkali metal ions ionpaired with tetrakis(3, 5-bis(trifluoromethy)phenyl)borate (TFPB) anion in nonpolar organic solvents was investigated in the C-C bond formation reactions catalyzed by sodium TFPB, the halochromism of 2, 4, 4′, 6-tetramethoxyazobenzene, and the alkali metal ion-catalyzed Diels-Alder reactions of cyclopentadiene with methyl vinyl ketone in dichloromethane and toluene solutions. The effective surface charge density of alkali metal ions, the effective coordination of the counter anions ion-paired with the metal ions, and the hydration number of the metal ions are proved to be the essential factors for the apparent electrophilicity of the alkali metal ions in nonpolar organic solvents.
