Abstract

Many different adult attachment style scales have been developed. Those scales were classified either into four-category or three-category attachment style scale and the forced choice or multiple choice format scale. Comparisons and integration of the previsous and new findings from adult attachment studies, using different types of scales, necessitate the careful examination of the correspondences among them. Although the correspondences between the 3 and 4 category scales in the forced choice format have been demonstrated, such examininations for the multiple-choice format remain almost intact. This study, therefore, investigated the following unexamined correspondences: (1) Two dimensions of four-category attachment model as calculated from RSQ (Griffin & Bartholomew, 1994)/RQ (Bartholomew & Horiwitz, 1991) and three factors as computed from Toda's 3 category attachment scale, (2) 4-categorical attachment styles as determined by RQ and Toda's 3 factors, (3) 4-category attachment scales in the forced-choice (RQ) and multiple-choice (RSQ) format. 211 college students participated in this study. As a result, the correspondence of (3) was demonstrated, and those of (1) and (2) were partly demonstrated. Three factors in three-category scale were discussed from the perspective of the two dimensions of four-category attachment model.
