The purpose of this paper is to exam the concept of “SYUTAISEI” (Self-direction) from the point of clinical psychology: Recently there have been a number of problems pertaining to children in school, such as school refusal or bullying. And as one of the reasons of their problems in children, “SYUTAISEI” or the ability to think by oneself and to act by oneself could be identified. The word “SYUTAISEI” has been used mainly in the field of philosophy, and it has been discussed with the problem of self for “SYUTAISEI”. This also holds true in the field of psychology. In clinical psychology and its related fields, it has been said that “SYUTAISEI” is a key element in many psychological problems. The concept of “SYUTAISEI” was closely examined by using “SYUTAISEI Scale”, which was constructed by the author, as a result, the structure of “SYUTAISEI” was suggested, along with the review of post studies. In the future study, it will be necessary to consider how the concept of “SYUTAISEI” could be practically applied in clinical work.
