Abstract

This is a basic study on the concept of childbirth amongst would-be mothers and fathers in order to establish a better professional supports towards pregnant women and their husbands. The respondents of this study were 59 mothers and 21 fathers, who had attended a parental school programs in Japan. A content analysis was made to categorize descriptive data, and the likelihood was examined through T-test and Chi-square test. The result of this study indicated that both mothers and fathers were strongly conscious of each other's traditional role on the basis of gender. For instance, the number of letters answered by mothers was significantly bigger than that of fathers, towards the questions of "What is a childbirth delivery for you?" (p<0.05) and "What is your anxious thing about childbirth?" (p<0.05). The content analysis further indicated the gender differences on explanation of childbirth. Mothers were likely to use various words, terms, jargons, and expressions, while fathers were likely to use very limited words, for instance 'health' or 'healthy' (p=0.06). This study showed that the concept and its explanation on childbirth differed by gender, reflecting a strong gender role; which is represented by the idea of "women are the gender of childbearing and childrearing".
