Abstract

As in many other cities in France, the regeneration of urban spaces accompanied by the innovation of public transportation system has realized recently in Bordeaux, where the vehicle-free zone attractive not only for the visitors but also for residential people in its metropolitan area has been expanded in the city center. This study aims to reveal the panicularity of public urban spaces by reviewing the process of formation of the historical urban center, and to analyze the current utilization, and to clarify the manipulation to reactivate city center with the balance between amenity for visitors and convenience for neighbors. As conclusion, we figure out the role of public spaces and suggest the urban design method for reactivation of declining downtowns.
