Description

As the first step of the information caputure system for forest management, this paper describes a new method for estimating sugi (Cryptomeria japonica D. Don) and hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa Endl.) site index (at 50 years) from interpreting topographical factors on a map with 50m×50m grid system of Kyushu university forest in Kasuya. The topographical factors used in this model are the effective relief, the degree of exposure and the effective storage capacity, and measurments of dominant tree height (site index) are taken at 52 sample plots stratified by species, stand age and the effective relief from 600 grids in all. Multiple-regressions are used to examine the relationship between the three factors and the site index, having coefficients of multiple-regression R=0.832 in sugi and 0.870 in hinoki, with significance at the 0.05 level of probability. It is observed that the proposed method enables to estimate the site index with a fairly high accuracy in the case of a Iimited area.
