Abstract

The temple of the Catholic Church is used for not only mass but also the place of listening to priest’s speech and religious music. And in recent years, chapel concerts are often held there. The value of the Church, therefore, cannot be talked about without the properties of acoustics. However, acoustic design is actually carried out in only few churches, and the difficulty in hearing of the conversation is frequently pointed out. On the above as background, this research studies the acoustics of Munakata St. Francisco Xavier Catholic Church. The survey reveals that speech intelligibility is poor and disciples wish easy conversation in this temple. On the basis of it, the authors examine how to improve the acoustics by a computer simulation, and propose some ideas reducing reverberations to improve speech intelligibility. They are actually carried out by the church. After the improvement, the authors measure the acoustics again and perform an experiment to confirm the effectiveness of sound absorptions. The results show Munakata Catholic Church turn to acquire a good acoustics.
