This paper is a comparative study of the function of headlines in Japanese and Chinese newspaper editorials. Referencing Nagano's (1986) "Categorizing Related Words, A Table of Example", I have divided the function of the headlines examined into two broad categories:(1) Presentation of topic (narrative description of events), (2) Statement of opinion (a. An active proclamation, b. An appeal to the reader). The research carried out has revealed that, regarding the headlines of editorials in both Japanese and Chinese, the overwhelming majority fitted into the category of "Statement of opinion". As a subsection of the "Statement of opinion" category, headlines in Japanese editorials make heavy use of "imperative-prohibitive" expressions, such as "do-do not", and in doing so appeal to the readership. This is a strong trend that is highly evident. On the other hand, the headings that appear in Chinese editorials frequently make use of "active proclamations", such as "opinions, evaluations and judgments". This is a trend that sees individuals clearly express their viewpoint.
