Abstract

The origin of the appointment system for government officials in China, Süan-chü 選挙, may be found in Ti-kuan-szŭ-t'u-p'ien 地官司徒篇 in Chou-li 周礼 or Wand-chih-p'ien 王制篇 in Li-chi 礼記, and in Han 漢 it was the system of Hsiang-chü-li-süan 郷挙里選, which was changed into Chiu-p'in-chung-chêng 九品中正 in San-kuo-wei 三国魏. This system, however, led to many evils as time went on, so that it was abolished in Si-wei 西魏 and government officials were appointed through the new system after Chou-li. This new system was succeeded by Pê-chou 北周, Sui 隋, T'ang 唐, Wu-tai 五代 and Sung 宋 with the system of Wang-chih-p'ien 王制篇 in Li-chi 礼記 added, and its name was called Kung-chü 貢挙 and then K'o-chü 科挙 from about the T'ang era.
