In 1366, disentangling the chaos at the end of the Yuan Dynasty, Zhu Yuan-zhang 朱元璋 founded the Ming Dynasty. He depended upon the landlord class in Jiangnan 江南. They supplied the human resources and the material support for the birth of Ming Dynasty. But after that, in order to affirm the power of the Dynasty, the government oppressed the landlords. In five scandals, thousands of landlords were purged. Nevertheless, it was indispensable condition for the rule to cooperate with landlords. So whole of the landlords could not be neglected. There existed the conflict between the idea and the reality of the Ming Dynasty, represented by Zhu Yuan-zhang. Taking up the Yimen Zheng family in Jinhua 金華, we examine what the landlord in Jiangnan was and how it reflected on the regime of Ming Dynasty in the course of the change from Yuan to Ming Dynasty.
