Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the position of eugenics in Japan during the 1930's-40's, in this period, eugenics, which had already penetrated into Japanese society since the beginning of the twentieth century, developed along with certain movements in politics. The Japanese army started establishing the "Defence State" around the same time. In this paper, the relation between the "Defence State" and Japanese eugenics is considered, focusing on the thoughts and actions of Koya Yoshio, who was one of the central figures in Japanese eugenics at the time. My argument is as follows. 1) Koya's inclination toward eugenics as a "normal science" reflects serious problems with modernism. 2) The eugenics movement in "Defence State", which was influenced by Kaya's thought, can be considered as an illness of modernism.
