Description
Both the intelligentsia, ruled by the Mongolians in the thirteenth century, and culture in the northern China were led to decline; but thanks to Yeh-lu Chu-tsai's (耶律楚材) effort, the Chinese intellectuals began to enter into politics and even within the Mongolian administration there rose a certain trend to reestablish the Chinese culture. This movement had two directions; one was to emphasize literature after the tradition of the Chin (金) dynasty, for the patronage of the preauthorities in the northern China who surrendered themselves to the Mongolian administration. The other was to support that philosophy of Dhu-Hsi (朱子) in the Sung (宋) dynasty with the thought of which they tried to enlighten the Mongolians. These two currents opposed each other on the K'o chu (科挙) system. The former sustained the way to test the ability of literature since the Chin (金) dynasty, while the latter, not thoroughly opposed, disliked such way, having great interest in personality rather than success in the examination for official service.
