Description

This paper explores the recent marriage behavior in Japan from the view point of generational relationship. Using the Japanese Panel Survey on Consumers (The Institute for Research on Household Economics), we investigate the marriage behavior in the 1990s and the early 2000s. We find that (1) financial transfers from the parents reduce the probability of marriage only for those whose parents were born before 1945 and those who entered the labor market during the bubble period in the 1980s. (2) For those who entered the labor market after the bust of the bubble economy in the 1990s, the probability of marriage was lowered because of either longer labor hours or unstable job position. (3) In general, marriage decisions cannot be explained by the income ratio between father/parents and a possible husband, except the case in which the father'/parents' income was above 500 million yen. In this case, the probability of marriage became lower.
