Description
In the voluminous annals of the biblical interpretation, the issue of Imago Dei has long been the crux theologorum from the early church to the current age as witnessed by the heated debate between Barth and Brunner over the Anknüpfungspunkt. The main thesis of the paper is that Imago Dei was an idiomatic expression during the first and second millennium B.C.E. in the Ancient Near East from Egypt to Mesopotamia signifying a "royal figure," i.e. a king. That God created human being in the "image of God" means God created human being as a royal figure, the supreme being among God's creatures. As a king in ancient times had dominion over his kingdom, human being, as a royal figure, is entrusted with the responsibility to rule over the natural world as God's steward/stewardess on earth.
