Abstract

In the UK, the Labour Government elected in 1997 has been working with voluntary sector organizations to expand their role in delivering and shaping public services. Especially "National Compact" - a concordat between the voluntary and public sectors to work together better in 1998- embraced Labour's basic proposition that the independence of the voluntary sector must be respected. This paper reviews recent policy in relation to the Compact and explores that impact on voluntary organizations and government.
