Abstract

This paper clarifies the discourse functions of the sentences without the nominalization marker, noda. Noda provides the information that does not exist in the hearer's assumption to promote his understanding of the whole situation. On the other hand, when the speaker uses non-noda sentences, he does not concern if the information is within the speaker's assumption or not. It conveys speaker's definite affirmation or negation of propositions. While noda provides related and background information and induce the hearer to grasp the whole picture, non-noda sentences present independent and central information not relating to other events/states.
