Abstract

Yu Youngmo was born in 1890, 15 years after Korea opened the port to Japan in 1875. He became a Christian in 1905, 20 years after a protestant missionary came to Korea in 1884. He was 20 when Japan annexed Korea in 1910. During these troubled and agitated times, he studied carefully the Bible and the Eastern scriptures and practiced religious self-discipline. This paper investigates his background of religious faith and practice during the annexation of Korea by Japan. He was influenced by Ahn Changho's thought because he had a deep relationship with the Shinminkai(New People's Society) founded by Ahn Changho.
