Abstract

Mitsui Bussan, which was established in Japan in 1876 and engaged in domestic and international trade, had dominative power in the Japanese economy prior to WWII. This study focuses on its inception period and clarifies that Senshu Kaisha, a predecessor of Mitsui Bussan, had a much larger staff than had been previously supposed. This study also asserts that Senshu Kaisha and Mitsui Bussan, in their inception periods, had employed some graduates of Keio Gijuku. It is supposed that those graduates had studied Western-style bookkeeping and foreign language in Keio Gijuku, and that they had therefore played an important role in the accounting or foreign trade departments of Mitsui Bussan.
