Abstract

A great deal of documentary photographs were taken in the United States during the Great Depression, and were widely circulated thanks to the flourish of photo journalism. They included many impressive images of people in poverty who had seldom been represented visually before. The purpose of this paper is to consider the various gazes on these images by tracing the development of FSA photography produced by the New Deal program as propaganda.
