Description

The book "What is Christianity?" (Das Wesen des Christentums), written by Adolf Harnack, who was a Protestant theologian, church historian, and a representative German theologian of the 19th and 20th centuries, caused much discussion not only among Christian circles but also within Judaism. Jewish theologian Leo Baeck, who was stimulated by Harnack's book, wrote "What is Judaism?" (Das Wesen des Judentums) in order to dispel Christian misunderstandings and prejudices about Judaism, especially the view that Judaism represents the dark historical background out of which Christianity emerged. Even though Harnack and Baeck never met in person, and both "What is Christianity?" and "What is Judaism?" are written as monologues, some people suggest these pieces can be read as a form of dialogue between Christianity and Judaism. Drawing from this viewpoint, Harnack's and Baeck's works will be compared to see what influence they exerted in the arena of theological dialogue.
