Description
Tadakazu Uwoki who presented the 'Japanese type of Christianity' has been criticized for distorting Christianity by combining traditional Japanese religions and Christianity based on nationalism. However, Uwoki refused to synchronize Christianity with Japanese religious ideas and did not show the violent nationalism that other 'Japanese Christianity' used to display. He argued that the Japanese, in a different way from the West, contacted with the gospel based on their religious spirituality, and they developed the Japanese type of Christianity. His work may be regarded as an attempt of an indigenous theology in today's language. His theological work dwindled owing to the social circumstances after the war and the limits of his theological method.
