Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to reveal the characteristics of the draft evasion in South Korea during the 1950s, through analyzing the judgments of the "Violation of the Military Service Act" courts. While the author has collected 244 records from the National Archives of Korea, this paper examined the background to the product of these judgments and clarified how the draft evaders punished in the courts. As a result, this article revealed that the legal penalties for the draft evaders had be not so severe in South Korea during the 1950s.
