Description

Due to a paucity of sources, up to now the specifics of urban development in castle towns built throughout late sixteenth century Japan have not been known. That is, very little is understood about who allotted residential plots of land and invited merchants to live there, thus allowing the towns to grow and flourish. The purpose of this paper is to address this issue through a close reading of some documents written in 1575. In 1575 the Takeda daimyo planned the development of a new residential and commercial area in Sunpu (Shizuoka City today), a castle town under his administration. ......
