This paper reports on the educational practices in an international co-learning course called “Introductory Seminar for Promoting Global Leadership”, which has been offered as a liberal education course at College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Kobe University since 2013. The “Introductory Seminar for Promoting Global Leadership” course is a project-based course that aims to foster intercultural competence through collaboration among students. In this course, home and international students work together to prepare for the Kobe University International Students’ Symposium(hereafter KISS), which is a one-night-two day bilingual symposium held every December. In the first part of this report, the authors, who are in charge of the course, introduce how we attempted to utilize the diversity of learners as a valuable resource for learning, and incorporate meaningful interaction to construct a mechanism that promotes mutual learning among students. Based on an analysis of students’ reflection comments and final individual reports, we can see that the students on this course not only developed a variety of perspectives on social issues, such as environmental problems, but also acquired the attitudes and communication skills that are essential when collaborating in a diverse environment. Finally, we can see that both home and international students learn how to exercise leadership, by utilizing their own diversity and strengths in a diverse environment, through collaboration in the weekly classes and in interactions with KISS participants during the symposium.
