During the Edo period in Japan, many Confucian tombs were constructed, modelled on Zhuxi's Jia-li of Nansong China. However, research on this subject has been rather limited. It is against this backdrop that the present study first explores exactly what a Jia-li style tomb is by examining tombs of this kind widely constructed in China and Korea. Having thus established a model the study employs field surveys and examines historical materials to ascertain genuine examples of Jia-li style tombs existing in Japan. Discussion is limited to the tombs of the "Hayashi-shi Bochi" graveyard. This study also provides insights about the ideological role of Confucianism in Japan.
