To improve pronunciation of a foreign language, most learners try to keep the acoustic image of target sounds in their minds and say it aloud to make sure if they can actually articulate them. By using a computer-assisted pronunciation program, learners of English as a foreign language can have such opportunities artificially but intensively. This study examined the effects of repeating stimuli sounds during practicing High Variability Phonetic Training through a computer program. Between pre- and post-tests, the learners completed training sessions three times a week in two phonetic environments. They are instructed to say aloud the stimuli sounds. The results demonstrated more improvement in perception and production compared with the amount of progress observed in a previous study where training was practiced only by listening. Repeating out loud seems to enhance the positive effects of HVPT on pronunciation improvement.
