Description

Prior research on the reception of Japanese art in Europe generally surveys the influence of Japanese art on the modeling of Western art on the other hand little research has been conducted to show how Japanese art history was established in Europe. This paper surveys the Museum of East Asian Art Cologne which opened in Germany in 1913 and its founder Adolf Fischer. Adolf Fischer recognized the value of Japanese and East Asian art which was not considered as art in Europe at that time as much as Western art and is considered as the first to establish the Museum of East Asian art in Europe. Prior research generally confirms several historical facts regarding the Museum of East Asian Art Cologne and Adolf Fischer. However prior studies have failed to evaluate how Adolf Fisher interprets East Asian art and how it was positioned in the establishment of Japanese art history in modern Europe. Therefore this study aims to explain Adolf Fisher’s interpretation of East Asian art through the examination of works by Adolf Fischer including the guidebook ‘Fuhrer durch das Museum fur Ostasiatische Kunst der Stadt Coln (Guide to the Museum of East Asian Art in the city of Cologne)’ published at the beginning of the museum's opening. As a result this study revealed that Adolf Fischer focused on fine art like paintings and sculptures not ukiyo-e and crafts which were attracting attention as collection objects in Europe at that time. Through the exhibition of those works from fine art he insisted that East Asian art was as valuable as Western art. Finally this study promotes a new perspective on the issue of the establishment of Japanese art history in modern Europe.
