説明

In order to improve English proficiency and the level of autonomy in language learning, the author introduced his seminar students to what he calls POSSES: Point System for Self-access English Study by university students. When using POSSES, learners are required to choose their learning activities to earn 20 points monthly and 200 points yearly. Using paper folders as a portfolio and Google Drive folders as an e-portfolio for compilation of the learning records, the author encouraged the learners to practice learning activities they chose from a learning activities list. The list consists of two categories: paperwork that requires continuous steady learning with books and papers, and fieldwork in which learners use English outside the class. The learners were required to fill in the designated forms or create evidence of their learning in any paper form, which were also converted to PDF files and compiled into the monthly folders shared with the author. The results indicated that all the leaners fulfilled the points requirement by the end of a year. The students’ English proficiency levels also improved significantly. The range of student learning activities expanded as the year went by. The individual interview records showed that continuing the point provision system with the e-portfolio helped the learners maintain their motivation and develop autonomy in learning English.
