物体の落下運動は、中学生にとって学習の困難な教材の一つである。本研究では、落下運動を理解困難にしている原因を明らかにしようと試みた。小学校5年生と中学校2年生に対して調査したところ、科学史でみられるのと似た見方が認められた。すなわち、子どもは落下運動における物体の速度の大小を、物体の重量で判断したり、物体にあたかも内在するような「いきおい」の大小で判断したりしている。ただし、中学2年生になれば、引力が意識化されて、正しい見方をする者が増えていく。しかし、落下運動の原因を、物体に内在する動員としての「いきおい」や「下向きに落ちようとする力」という見方も根強くあった。こうした見方をまずどう脱却させるかから学習活動を始めなければならないという課題が明確になった。

The concept of free fall of body is not easy for junior high school students to understand. In order to clarify the causes of the difficulty, the authors conducted a auestionnaire, to the fifth-graders at elementary school and the second-year students at junior high school, to see how they understand the concept. The results indicate as follows; 1) the fifth-graders mistakenly understand that the speed of a falling body is affected by the weight of the body or the impulse (imetus) to it. 2) The second-year students at junior high school, having understood gravitation, have gradually acquired the concept of free fall, 3) however, quite a few students still have the misunderstanding that body falling is caused by impulse or downward force included in the body itself. The paper concludes tha it is clear that it well be an important assignment to research how their misunderstanding should be resolved.
