本稿では、英語の話し言葉のデータベースから頻度の高い単語を抽出し、それらの単語親密度を日本人高校生に調査した結果を報告する。学習者の英単語の親密度も大きく関与していると思われる。また、単語親密度は学習者の言語知識や言語経験を反映し、単語頻度とともに、学習語彙の選定に役立つものと考えられる。頻度都心密度とはどのような関係にあるのか、そして親密度が高いと低い語にはどのようなものがあるのか。これらの問いを通して、単語親密度から語彙の学習の実態を調べることを本稿の目的とし、詳細な分析と統計処理によって得た結果を報告する。

This study reports word familiarity ratings of English words by Japanese high school students. Word familiarity indicates how subjectively familiar a particular word is. It is more than probable that word familiarity ratings as well as word frequency ratings reflect language learners'linguistic knowledge and experience. The present survey was conducted to obtain students'ratings of word familiarity. 121 high school students performed a word familiarity-rating task in which they rated their familiarity with a printed list of English words on a 7-point scale. The word list was a random sample of 300 words selected from a database of spoken language of native speakers of English, based on word frequencies in The Bergen Corpus of London Teenage Language (COLT). There appeared to be some rank correlation between word familiarity ratings and word frequency ratings(rs=0.601, p<0.001). It also turned out that there were some high familiarity words that were labeled as low frequency ones and vice versa. From the findings in the present study, it is deemed desirable to use word familiarity in addition to word frequency in developing word lists for language learners, because subjective word familiarity covers the shortcomings of word frequency. Future research must more deliberately determine how word familiarity functions in various Japanese EFL learners.
