Abstract

In this study, the mesiodistal crown diameters of the maxillary incisors, canines, and first premolars were measured using maxillary dental casts of Japanese female Angle’s Class I molar relation participants with large maxillary central incisors. The relationship of crown dimensions between maxillary central incisors and other teeth was investigated, and the following results were obtained.

In this study, the mesiodistal crown diameters of the maxillary lateral incisors and canines were larger than the average values for Japanese women. The mesiodistal crown diameter in modern Japanese women is increasing, as reported in another study.

Significant correlations were found between the mesiodistal crown diameters of maxillary central incisors and canines. If the mesiodistal crown diameter of the maxillary central incisors was larger than the average value, it was predicted that the crown diameter of the maxillary canines would also be larger than the average value.

No significant correlations of the mesiodistal crown diameters between the maxillary central incisors, lateral incisors, and first premolars were observed. The coefficient of variation of the maxillary lateral incisor was greater than that of the other teeth. This could be owing to the tooth type with a large variation in the crown dimension, the mesiodistal crown diameter of the maxillary first premolar was not correlated with that of the maxillary central incisor.

The mesiodistal crown diameter of the central incisor should be measured in the early mixed dentition stage for the effective prevention of malocclusion in the permanent dentition.
