Abstract

Among the various versions of academic papers, the Version of Record (VoR) has established a firm position as the version of record for academic research. However, controversy has arisen between publishers and the academic community over the VoR. In this debate, the academic community has proposed the idea of RoV (Record of Versions) as an alternative to VoR. In this paper, firstly the definition of versions of scholarly articles recommended by the joint working group of the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) and the Association of Academic and Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) is explained. Next, the controversy between publishers and the academic community over VoR will be covered, and the RoV concept that emerged from that controversy will be introduced. The various efforts to implement RoV will also be discussed.
