<p>Ritsumeikan Asia Pacific University has developed “Global Collaborative University Education” programs with our partner school, St. Edward’s University in the US, implementing educational programs for the students of both institutions to learn from each other and capitalize on each institution’s strengths and resources. In order to carry out collaborative learning in overseas programs, educational design and support must be intentionally developed rather than merely receiving and/or sending students. Our “collaborative joint course” and “collaborative field study” are created to promote intercultural collaborative learning; the former exercised experiential activities and Japan-US collaborative projects to trigger mutual learning, and the latter involved collaborative field research under an equal environmental condition in the countries of Thailand and Malaysia, which are foreign environments to both sets of students. Both programs implemented collaborative teaching, in addition to students’ collaborative learning. Other programs utilized our buddy system and offered opportunities for student and buddy collaborative learning. We also conducted buddy training, aiming not just to provide a better support in our inbound programs, but also to enhance buddies’ growth as well as students’ learning from each other. This system triggered a unique cycle of encouraging buddies to study abroad in the partner institution and overseas students to become buddies upon their return. In 2014, we analyzed and identified outcomes in our collaborative education. In this paper, we report our practices and discuss a framework for intercultural collaborative education.</p>
