Abstract

Objective: To explore the obstructive and facilitative factors of nursing research activities during the spread of COVID-19.

Methods: An online questionnaire survey was conducted, which included 1,532 members who consented to participate in the study among the members of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science. Qualitative content analysis was performed for analyzing the responses of 554 participants to open-ended questions regarding research activities during the spread of COVID-19 from April 2020 to June 2020 using the research process as an analysis framework.

Results: Obstructive factors for each research process were classified into 12 categories, such as uncertainty about the feasibility of research plans and concerns about burden on both the researchers and research participants. Facilitative factors for each research process were classified into seven categories, including the change of perception to one that is free from existing values, selection and concentration on the publication of research results.

Conclusion: The results suggest that for facilitating sustainable nursing research activities, establishing creative research methodologies through interdisciplinary collaboration, reifying ethical considerations, taking efforts to improve the systematic research environment, strengthening research management competencies, changing thoughts and taking action are important.
