Titanium materials are widely used for orthopedic and dental materials because of their excellent biocompatibility. Recently, surface modification methods have been tried to improve biocompatibility of dental implant materials. In this study, titanium and aluminum substrates were sandblasted to fabricate a surface with various roughness. The biocompatibility of those samples was studied to clarify the effect of sand blasted surface. After culturing cells on procecced samples, the cell adhesion density was measured by BCA (bicinchoninic acid assay) method. The observation of the surface of each sample was carried out by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). As a result, it was found that Ti sample with the surface blasted with steel particles of diameter 500 um and amount 25 g showed best affinity than other samples for cell adesion. This indicates that appropriate roughness is needed to obtain a good biocompatibility.
