Space organization is often discussed as a purely physical problem but it is rarely approached as a problem involving humans. That is, open space has been treated as negative space in the physical planning processes of regional planning, urban design, and site planning. Open space created as a result of physical considerations, only, will become blighted and unfit for human use. This ph.D. dissertation intends to approach open space organization of natural areas through landscape planning and design based on the interdependence of human and space. This research is composed of three chapters summarized below. Chapter 1 Chapter one includes a discussion of prior concepts of space organization and intends to clarify all aspects of space organization. Also, the definition of some theories for space organization in planning and design is attempted. Chapter 2 Chapter two is an attempt to investigate the functional interdependence of humans and open space by focussing on a case study in the Hieizan Area of Shiga Prefecture. First the constructive analysis method was applied. In that method, open space in the study area was analized as a total situation with natural, mophological, visual, and human behavioral characteristics. Then by focussing on the correspondence between visual volume and recognition distance as a perceptual structure for open space organization, the view patterns of objects were prepared and a method to represent the relation ships mathematically was developed. Chapter 3 Chapter tree includes a test of the concepts and methods developed in the previous chapters by a case study in the Seishin Area of Hyogo Prefecture. Many kinds of physical forms were abstracted from this study of the interdependence between natural elements, evolved in open space, and human behavioral patterns. These were applied to open space systens as design process.
