Abstract
This study provides an overview of the 1984 speech by Governor Mario Cuomo, a Catholic politician, at the University of Notre Dame, a catholic university. In his speech, Cuomo said that although he opposed abortion, he could not force his views through a policy. Around the same time, and in opposition to the Reagan administration (Republican Party) that was promoting pro-life policies, the Democratic Party selected Geraldine Ferraro, a Catholic, as the first female vice-presidential candidate for the 1984 presidential election. Cuomo’s speech was considered to have been in support of her candidature. This speech became a hot topic then and continues to influence U.S. politics and society today. This study analyzes the speech, an area unexplored in previous studies in Japan.
