Abstract

This article presents a new perspective on community education in Taiwan under the Japanese government. This study focused on analyzing the case of Tainan Normal School in the 1930s. The conclusions of this article are as follows: ①The Japanese learned more about Taiwan through community education. Moreover, the Taiwanese were restrained from forming their identities through community education and thus fostered patriotism through assimilation. ②Geography was a central part of the study in community education, and the“ New Taiwan Geographical Overview” consisted of two parts: i) physiographic content that incorporated the latest geographic research results and ii) human geographic content on Taiwan as a Japanese colony. ③The community education at Tainan Normal School focued on geography, history, and education.
