Abstract

A Jack Russell Terrier with right divisional intrahepatic portosystemic shunt developed hepatic encephalopathy at 2 months of age. Subsequently, the dog underwent shunt vessel ligation thrice between the ages of 5 and 11 months. However, none of the surgeries were successful since the shunt vessel could not be isolated. Hence, the dog was referred to Koide Animal Hospital, Okayama, Japan at the age of 19 months. After ventral midline ceilotomy and median sternotomy, severe abdominal adhesions were removed carefully. The shunt vessel of the caudate lobe was isolated using a ultrasonic surgical aspirator. Due to portal hypertension after partial ligation, the complete ligation was postponed for 2 months. During re-exploration surgery, the liver was found to be of normal size and the branch of portal vein had formed. However, the dog had developed portosystemic collaterals. The dog was stable and healthy at 12 months after re-exploration.
