説明
The area encompassed by the “Tibetan cultural sphere” covers approximately 3,800,000 square kilometers, or roughly 10 times the territory of Japan. The Tibetan population of approximately 5,000,000, lives inside the Chinese border, though with communities in India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Pakistan. The author performed field work research in this area from 1990 to 2010 and presented the findings on Tibetan culture and customs as visual anthropology through many pictorial works. Based on folk evidence, it is clear that a “Polyandry” marriage system was used in this region from ancient times. In this paper, the reasons underlying the use of polyandry in Tibet have been inspected multilaterally from the perspectives of the environment, economy, and religion. The author compares this analysis with the field research as a participant observer in Humla. Finally, the reasons for choosing and maintaining polyandry among Tibetan peoples will be brought to light.
