Abstract

In Meiji Japan, 31 UK railway engineers engaged the construction and management of the Imperial Railways of Japan. It is true that the records of Railway Department show their contributions to IRJ. But in order to investigate the implications of their engineering practices in Japan for their careers and motivations to IRJ, it is necessary to follow their engineering careers including home environments, educations, and apprenticeships before Japan. Reading these materials both in UK and in Japan show their whole engineering histories, and the implications of their accomplishments in Japan. By the way I call the “engineer” as the Members(including the Associate Members and Students Members) of the Institution of Civil(Mechanical) Engineers.

In this paper, I introduce the records in UK, and the archives and libraries that I visited(including my personal comments), finally by using these records I show the family history of Edmund Morel who was the first Engineer-in-Chief of IRJ, and Soseki NATSUME in 1901.
