Abstract

〔Aims〕To identify the intentions of faculty members in conducting teaching activities at nursing skills laboratories and to consider the characteristics of the teaching activities, in order to train nurses who can practice care that applies knowledge and skills.

〔Methods〕The study was carried out via the mailing of a questionnaire survey to 232 faculty members at nursing skills laboratories who work for Nursing Schools(3-year course)across the country and who have more than three years’ teaching experience as a faculty member. The collected data were analyzed using the content analysis method for nursing education based on Berelson’s methodology.

〔Results〕Specific statements were given by 97 out of the total of 104 respondents. Analysis of the data from those 97 respondents revealed that 18 categories of the teaching activities were conducted by the faculty members, based on their intentions in the nursing skills laboratories. For example, these included, “Providing supplementary explanations and asking questions that link the support and grounds intended to establish the basic knowledge.”

〔Conclusions〕As a result of referring to literature to examine the 18 categories identified, it was suggested that the teaching activities based on the intentions of faculty members at nursing skills laboratories have six characteristics. These included “developing a teaching system and lesson plans that provide step-by-step learning and opportunities for repeated practice, with the intention of acquiring evidence-based skills.”
