Abstract

Authors have proposed the multiple frequency step method as a radar modulation/demodulation method that achieves both a long-distance performance and a high resolution, and have shown the effectiveness through many simulations and experiments. On the other hand, for automotive radar, which is a common application, we face the multipath fading problem. As a countermeasure to the problem, we have already reported that the frequency diversity with the maximum ratio combine (MRC) method to multiple bands is effective. In this paper, it is also shown that the multiple frequency step method with comb-shaped frequency assign is one of the candidates for solving the problem even if the frequency bands are non-coherent. For the application to automotive radar, the change of the multi-path environment due to the movement of radar and targets in the observation time should be also taken into account. For mitigating the effects of the change, MRC method with eigen-space tracking method is employed for the signal processing of the multiple frequency step method. Its effectiveness and difference between 3 cases of signal processing in automotive radar environment are shown through the simulation results.
