These taped responses were subsequently transcribed to determine the extent and detail of the response. We found the identifi cation of cues every seven items. Nursing students were also given a questionnaire to be complet ed in order to determine what kind of patient cues they took notice of. The results of this analysis were as follows :

. Conversation was the most notable patient cues by auditory of nursing students.

.Smiling was the most noticeable visual cues. Identification of cues was low for fine movements and movements of body parts apart from the face.

.Few students mentioned, or were influenced by, the vocal attributes of tone, inflection and vol ume.

.There was a significant correlation between the subjective assessment of attention, and the number of verbalizations for sighing, body posture and movement, and hand movement.

.For six of the seven patient cues, the number of responses was higher in those students who were more responsive to "hand movements".
