Abstract

This case study describes a boy in the first grade of elementary school who complained of distress about his homework immediately after entering school. The boy was reluctant to go to school after the summer vacation. As a result, the school recommended that he take the WISC-IV test. In the WISC-IV feedback session, the examiner emphasized empathic understanding of the boy's cognitive functions, distress associated with environmental changes, and the parents' understanding of his feelings. At the two-year follow-up, the parents reported that the test results were continuously used in school, and taking the test was helpful for their future. It is suggested that taking the WISC-IV, in which the tester carefully listened to the parents' impatience and distress, and the feedback session provided by the tester were useful as psychological support in the transition from kindergarten to elementary school.
