Description

This paper critically investigates the meaning of Active Learning from the nature of university education in Japan. From the ideas of Goethe, Hegel, Mill, the core of university education is to acquire "Bildung". It means "to build oneself in interaction with others", "to gain comprehensive thinking", "relate ideas and think systematically", "to use knowledge", "to identify problems", and "to learn research skills" as the basis of one's own knowledge. Although researches and practices of Active Learning has been seem not to be relevant to the essence of education and human development. According to Steiner, education should be based on the understanding of stages of human development. In addition, university students are in the period of adolescence that they must know the truth of the world, must be surprised and moved. Therefore, this paper suggests that university teachers should design their own classes based on the concept of human development stage in order for students to acquire "Bildung".
