Abstract

The present paper analyses Ike no Taiga's "Three Perfections of Poetry, Calligraphy and Painting" in order to examine the novel ideas embodied in this work, as well as to interpret the mysterious relationship between the poetry and the painting of his Tozan Seiin-jō, a work written in Taiga's last year. First, this study summarizes the conventional viewpoints on the formation and development of the forms of "Three Perfections" in literary paintings. Second, on the basis of the different images of calligraphy and painting in a single work, this study investigates the works that include poetry, calligraphy and painting, by dividing them into four sections. Thus, the influence of Zen thinking on Taiga's human spirit and artistic realm, as embodied in the Heart Sutra and in his abstract calligraphies and paintings, is also investigated.
