Spinoza's immanence-theory, which is expressed by the formula "Deus sive Natura", does not mean "Deus in omnibus", but rather "omnia in Deo". This theory which dominates his discussions on metapysics, epistemology, psychology, ethics, etc. can be said to be the very foundation of Spinoza's philosophical system. Our chief concern is to consider whether or not his immanence-theory can be regarded as a legitimate answer, as Spinoza seems to profess to give, to the difficulties raised and left unsolved by Descartes concerning the mind-body relation. At first glance Spinoza's so-called parallelism which follows from his immanence-theory seems to give an adequate answer to the problem. Further examination, however, will readily show that it is far from being the case. Unlike Descartes who made great efforts to distinguish 'science' from 'life', as belonging to two different spheres, Spinoza tried to treat these two as belonging to the same dimension, which amounts to reducing the latter to the former. After all his immanence-theory means that the whole world could be put into one rational system without any serious breach of logic, which seems to us too good to be true.
