Abstract

“Hakugin” is known as the extra-fine filament silkworm race. However, improvement of oviposition properties for better silkworm egg production is necessary. We grew new strains with improved cocoon filaments and oviposition properties, “Hakurei.” However, the difficulty of the mature larvae of “Hakurei” to ascend to rotatory cocooning frames in the sericultural field became apparent. Matured larvae were mounted on three plastic collapsible mountages piled on rearing beds. Individuals that cocooned at the upper mountage were selected. After repeated selections from multiple generations, the cocooning percentage at the upper mountage increased in the original and hybrid “Hakurei” races.
